Pacific Rim National Park

Welcome to the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve of Canada.
Backed by the Vancouver Island Range and facing the open Pacific Ocean, Pacific Rim presents the rich natural and cultural heritage of Canada’s west coast. Its cool and wet maritime climate produces an abundance of life in the water and on land. Lush coastal temperate rainforest gives way to bountiful and diverse intertidal and subtidal areas. These natural wonders are interwoven with the long and dynamic history of the Nuu-chah-nulth First Nations and European explorers and settlers.

Amphitrite Lighthouse

Originally built in 1906, Amphitrite Lighthouse stands on a rocky outcrop on the southern end of the peninsula near Ucluelet overlooking the Barclay Sound and rugged coastline on Vancouver Island. A popular destination for hikers on the Wild Pacific Trail, the lighthouse offers panoramic views of the coastline, Barclay Sound, and the playful sea lions just offshore. The historic lighthouse is accessed via Peninsula Road through Ucluelet or by hiking the Wild Pacific Trail’s Lighthouse Loop, a scenic path that traces the edge of the coastline. Be careful when exploring the rocky shoreline as the sea is unpredictable with pounding waves.

George Fraser Gardens and self-guided walking tours.

George Fraser was a Scottish gardener who started his gardens in Ucluelet in 1894.  His first garden is still at that site today.  He specialized in rhododendrons, azaleas, and heathers while operating a thriving mail-order nursery and market garden.

Before his death in 1944, George Fraser said, “I don’t know where I am going to end up, but it doesn’t matter, I’ve had my heaven here on earth.”

A selection of his plants including rhododendrons, ornamental shrubs, and heritage trees still remain in Ucluelet.  Take a stroll down Fraser Lane in Ucluelet and view his gardens that remain on those properties to this day!

Ucluelet and Area Historical Society

The Ucluelet and Area Historical Society is currently planning a Museum for land acquired near Amphitrite Lighthouse in Ucluelet. Until funds for this building project are obtained this group is active in archiving historic photos, collecting verbal histories, and in holding events to celebrate the region’s importance.
